Description

This is an image of the same two numerals:
1.) "2012" are the Arabic numerals which are Base-10.
2.) The characters in the background are the Mayan numerals for "2012" which are Base-20. If you remember the "counting by 5's" technique, using the four sticks and a cross-stick to make 5. It is similar to the Mayan method. Once the Mayans had 4 dots (1 dot, 2 dots, 3 dots, 4 dots), then the 5th dot made the numeral 5 by using a horizontal bar. They stacked their numerals. The bottom two bars (5 for each bar) plus the two dots immediately above make the numeral 12. Once they had 4 bars, they then started a new counting set above those bars, but 4 bars ( equals 20, then an egg with one dot above equals 21) is the same as the placeholder egg which was their "zero" The egg shape in the middle is the numeral 0, meaning there are no 20's Base-20 digits. The top bar is also a 5, but its position indicates it is a Base-20 value for the 400's place (20 squared equals 400, similar to the Arabic Base-10, which is 10 squared, or 100.) Thus 5 times 400 equals 2000. Add them all together, and you have 2000 + 0 + 12 = 2012.

The glyphs in each corner are from a public domain image on Wikipedia ([link]) located at: [link]
